Regardless of the thrill you’re seeking, we got you covered. From a fun night out with the family to three days of adrenaline-filled driving, our Experiences will let you tap into that aspiring inner racer and have an absolute blast while doing it.”

CHANDLER, Arizona – June 10, 2025 – Radford Racing School (https://radfordracingschool.com/), the nation’s foremost driving and racing school, has added a new Defensive Driving Academy to its legendary lineup of performance driving and racing courses. Designed for drivers of all ages, the new Academy offers an exhilarating alternative to traditional defensive driving programs and gives students enrolled in the course the option of driving new Dodge vehicles for the first time.

“Over the years, we’ve been asked to develop a dedicated defensive driving program that combines our professional driver training and world-class facility with our fleet of performance-ready Dodge vehicles,” said Chuck Sundstrom, General Manager of Radford Racing School. “We answered that demand with our new Defensive Driving Academy that is an exciting alternative to traditional, often mundane driver education programs. Our one and two day course options are perfect for drivers of every skill level and age. Students will even get to train in our performance-ready Dodge Challenger Hellcat and Dodge Charger Hellcat.”

The Defensive Driving Academy is available for new and experienced drivers, including those with a valid Learners Permit. It was created to develop responsible driving habits in a safe, controlled environment. The one-day course includes classroom instruction along with slalom, accident avoidance, autocross and hot laps with instructors. The two-day course adds additional track time with a focus on high speed braking and advanced handling and autocross training. Every graduate receives a certificate of completion.

“Our new Academy is the defensive driving program you didn’t know you need but will most certainly build your skills behind the wheel,” said Sundstrom. “It will give new drivers more confidence, while seasoned drivers will hone their skills. We’re bringing our performance-level driver training to each course and translating that into safer driving standards for the road. While this course bucks the trend of a traditional defensive driving course, our students will walk away with the knowledge and skills they need to stay safe behind the wheel.”

The Radford Racing School Defensive Driving Academy may qualify for certain auto insurance discounts. Students should contact their provider prior to enrolling in the course.

Maybe you are looking for a gateway into the world of motorsports. Or perhaps you’re just looking for the ultimate track experience with friends, family or colleagues?

Go karting has become one of the most accessible forms of motorsports in the US, with over 35 million Americans participating in the sport every year.

But why is it so popular? …And, more importantly, where is the best place to experience the thrill of gas-powered karting near you?

Read on to find out more about karting and why this popular motorsport has become one of the most loved track experiences for family, friends, and racing professionals.

What is Go Karting?

Go-karting is where the love of racing begins for so many people.

It’s one of the most accessible motorsports categories, giving drivers the thrill of full-scale racing, while just a few inches off the ground without needing a race car license.

Go-karts are small, lightweight open-wheel vehicles that are surprisingly quick, easy to handle, and perfect for anyone, whether you’re a total beginner or have an ambition to progress into professional racing.

Go-karting isn’t just about having fun (though there’s plenty of that).

It’s also the gateway to the world of motorsport. Big names like Jeff Gordon and Danica Patrick started their careers in go-karts, learning the skills and instincts that would take them to the top.

Whether you’re chasing that competitive edge or just looking for an unforgettable day out with friends, go-karting delivers the kind of pure, unfiltered driving excitement that’s hard to beat.

The History of Go Karting

Go karting goes back to the 1950s, originating in Southern California. Art Ingels is often credited as the inventor of the first kart. Ingels built this initial prototype using surplus lawnmower engines and simple steel tubing.

Karting gained popularity quickly.

By the end of the 1950s, kart racing spread across the United States, with organized races and dedicated tracks emerging. This rise in popularity led to the formation of the International Karting Federation (IKF) in 1957.

The 1960s and 1970s saw karting become more sophisticated.

Manufacturers started designing specialized karts, and the sport expanded to Europe and Asia. The World Karting Association (WKA) was established in the 1970s, overseeing regional racing events and promoting karting safety standards.

Technical advancements in engine design and materials throughout the 1980s and 1990s made karts faster and more reliable. This era also saw the emergence of go-kart racing schools, allowing enthusiasts to learn professional racing techniques, and enhancing both the safety and skill levels in the sport.

Cross-generational appeal contributed to karting’s evolution into a global phenomenon, with championships held worldwide.

Today, it serves as an accessible entry point into motorsports and remains a popular recreational activity enjoyed by people of all ages.

Formula 4 racing represents a critical stepping stone for aspiring drivers aiming to enter the world of professional motorsports. Designed to provide a supportive environment for junior drivers, it offers a platform where they can gain essential skills and experience behind the wheel of an open-wheel racecar.

This category of open-wheel racing enables participants to compete in a streamlined format that fosters both development and competition while working towards higher-level race categories.

The structure of Formula 4 is unique, with championships hosted by individual nations or regions that all adhere to a universal set of rules. The format not only simplifies entry into the motorsport world but also makes it accessible to a broader range of talent. As drivers refine their technique and gain valuable track time, they often catch the attention of scouts and teams in higher racing tiers.

What is Formula 4 Racing?

Open-wheel racing, particularly in the context of Formula 4, adopts raw driving skills and allows drivers to push the limits of their abilities in purpose built vehicles such as the Ligier JS F4 Formula 4 racecar. The thrill of racing in these single-seater cars attracts a varied selection of participants and has a large fan base that is eager to witness the next generation of talent as they make their mark in the motorsport landscape.

Formula 4 racing has established itself as a critical entry point in the world of motorsport. Some of the world’s most renowned racers were once at the wheel of an F4 car before starting their professional race careers.

The Emergence of Formula 4 Racing

Origins and Evolution

Formula 4 was designed as a structured pathway for young drivers transitioning from karting to single-seater racing. The category was officially created in March 2013 by the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) to standardize junior open-wheel racing.

Before Formula 4, various series like Formula Ford and other local championships existed, but they lacked uniformity.

The introduction of Formula 4 has provided a more consistent platform, enabling drivers to compete on a global stage while following a universal set of rules. This has allowed for better talent identification and development in the racing community.

Formula 4

Governing Bodies and Regulations

Governance by the FIA ensures compliance with specific technical regulations and safety standards. Each national region can host its own championship, leading to a decentralized but standardized competition structure.

Regulations cover aspects such as car specifications, engine limits, and weight requirements. Cars are typically powered by a four-cylinder engine, limiting power throughout the class and putting the emphasis on both performance and driver skill.

Additionally, the FIA mandates safety features, including crash structures and fire-resistant materials. This ensures a higher level of safety for junior drivers, allowing them to gain experience in a competitive yet controlled environment.

These regulations promote fairness and encourage young drivers to focus on skill development, essential for their future careers in motorsport.

Key Attributes of Formula 4 Cars

Formula 4 cars are designed to provide a competitive yet accessible entry point into open-wheel racing. Their technical specifications, comparison to other formula series, and specific models like the Ligier JS F4 demonstrate what makes these vehicles unique and essential for aspiring drivers.

Technical Specifications

Formula 4 cars have strict technical specifications to ensure a level playing field for all competitors. Key features include a lightweight chassis made from advanced composite materials, typically weighing around 150 kg (330 lbs), without the driver.

The engines used are 1.6-liter, four-cylinder powerplants that produce about 160 to 180 horsepower. These engines are designed to be reliable and cost-effective, crucial for the entry-level category.

Additionally, the cars feature standardized aerodynamic components, including front and rear wings, to enhance downforce and handling.

Comparison to Other Formulas

Compared to higher formula categories like Formula 3, Formula 2 and Formula 1, Formula 4 cars are simpler and less expensive to operate. While F1 and F2 vehicles often have sophisticated hybrid engines and advanced aerodynamics, Formula 4 emphasizes driver skill above all else by using a spec design and engine specification.

The race formats in Formula 4 are structured to allow multiple events in a weekend, promoting driver experience without overwhelming the budget. This accessibility ensures that aspiring drivers can gain vital track time and race experience.

Ligier JS F4 Formula 4 Racecar

The Ligier JS F4 is one of the prominent models used in Formula 4 racing, and the car chosen for our Formula 4 courses at Radford Racing School. It features a sleek, aerodynamic design that enhances performance on the track.

Powered by a 1.6-liter Honda engine, it aligns with the specifications set by the FIA for the category. The car is designed for excellent handling and responsiveness, making it ideal for young drivers to refine their skills.

The car also incorporates telemetry systems that allow teams to analyze data in real-time, aiding in tuning the vehicle for optimal performance.

Competitions and Championships

Formula 4 racing provides a competitive platform for emerging drivers to showcase their talents. Various regional championships and notable events create pathways for young racers aspiring to reach higher levels in motorsport.

Formula 2

Notable Races and Events

Formula 4 features several prominent races throughout the year that attract significant attention. Events like the F4 U.S. Championship and various national series are integral to the calendar, including various F4 racing events at Radford Racing School. These competitions provide drivers with valuable experience and usually include:

  • F4 Season Openers: These mark the start of the F4 racing season, often involving high-stakes competitions that pave the way for the rest of the racing season.
  • F4 Finale Races: These large events are the decider for championship standings and determine the season’s finalists
  • F4 Support Events: It is fairly common for Formula 4 races to serve as support events for higher-level motorsport events such as Formula 2. These events are designed to increase the visibility of Formula 4 and not only test driver skills but also engage fans and sponsors.

How to get into Formula 4

Success in Formula 4 often serves as a stepping stone for drivers aiming for professional careers. The series provides crucial exposure to teams, sponsors, and media, increasing a driver’s chances for advancement.

Drivers can transition to higher categories such as Formula Regional and Formula 3. This progression is facilitated by scouts evaluating performance, networking, and driving skill development.

Formula 4

Formula 4 events are a favorite pool of talent for the bigger league racing teams. Scouts often visit Formula 4 races in search of their next star driver. These events are also a fantastic way of meeting people who are in the industry, providing excellent networking opportunities for furthering your race career.

Finally, exposure to events and increasing your track time are the best ways to develop your driving ability and hone the skills that are essential for success in the more advanced racing categories.

Ever wondered how professional drivers handle cars at high speeds on a track? Our high performance driving courses offer the skills and thrill of pushing a vehicle to its limits in the controlled environment of the Radford racetrack.

It’s not just about speed, but precision and control, making it a thrilling experience for any motorsports enthusiast.

Taking a high-performance driving course provides the knowledge and skills to become a more confident and capable driver on track and on the road.

Track driving courses are becoming increasingly popular among car enthusiasts. These courses are designed for both beginner and experienced drivers. They teach essential techniques such as braking, cornering, and handling, building on current skills and developing your knowledge.

At Radford Racing School, we offer professional instruction and a comprehensive advanced driving curriculum tailored to various skill levels. By learning from experienced instructors, attendees gain insight into advanced driving techniques that improve both safety and enjoyment on the track.

High Performance Driving Principles

High performance driving requires skill and knowledge. Drivers learn the fundamentals of vehicle dynamics, racing lines, braking, cornering, and throttle control in a course that matches their level of experience.

Understanding Vehicle Dynamics

Vehicle dynamics are the forces that affect a car as it moves. Key factors include weight distribution, tire grip, and suspension geometry. When driving at high speeds, understanding these dynamics is crucial. Weight transfer can affect handling during acceleration and braking, causing the car to react in different ways.

Tire grip and suspension play a vital role in car control. During high performance courses, drivers will look at the theoretical and practical effects of these factors. This helps a driver predict how the car will respond to inputs. Learning about these dynamics is the first step to becoming a skilled high-performance driver.

Mastering the Racing Line

The racing line is the optimal path around a track. It allows the fastest route through a corner. The key is to enter the corner from the outside, hit the inside apex, and exit towards the outside. This maximizes speed and control.

Instructors often teach the “slow in, fast out” technique. This means reducing speed before entering a corner for a smoother exit.

Mastering the racing line improves lap times and confidence on the track. Applying these techniques can make a significant difference in performance.

Braking Techniques

Braking is more than just slowing down. It involves precise timing and pressure application. Threshold braking is the technique of applying maximum braking force without locking the wheels. This requires careful modulation of the brake pedal.

Trail braking is another useful method where drivers not only utilize threshold braking, but they also start gradually reducing brake pressure as they turn through the corner. This technique can help rotate the car and maintain balance. Knowing when and how to brake can greatly affect cornering speed and control.

Cornering Skills

Proper cornering involves balance, speed, and technique. One of the most important skills is understanding a turn’s entry, apex, and exit points. The “slow in, fast out” rule applies here too, allowing for better control and speed exiting the corner.

Maintaining a smooth steering input is essential. Jerky or sudden movements can unsettle the car’s balance.

Paying attention to these details during cornering can improve overall handling and performance. Cornering is about precision and control, not just speed.

Throttle Control

Throttle control is about knowing how and when to apply power. Smooth and progressive throttle application helps maintain traction and stability. Sudden acceleration can lead to wheelspin, especially during corner exits – often leading to loss of control.

Maintaining balance through gradual throttle input is crucial. Learning to work the throttle in different conditions is important, particularly when you’re accelerating out of a corner or in wet conditions. Throttle control plays a vital role in achieving smooth and controlled high-speed driving.

High Performance Vehicles

High performance driving focuses on gaining the skills and knowledge to handle a performance vehicle, extracting power in the most effective way – pushing the limits of traction and shaving down lap time.

But what makes a high performance vehicle?

At Radford, we exclusively use Dodge vehicles. During our high performance course, drivers will be behind the wheel of the 717hp Dodge Challenger SRT® Hellcat Widebody. This purpose-built track machine puts out over 500hp more than the average daily driver, making it a fierce competitor on the track.

Performance Facts: Dodge Challenger SRT® Hellcat Jailbreak Widebody

  • Engine: 717hp 6.2L HEMI V8 supercharged
  • Acceleration: 0-160 mph in 3.7 seconds
